LOMBOK SALT

The salt mines of Lombok Island are a centuries-old industry located in the island’s eastern coastal area, district Pujut. Using traditional methods, seawater is evaporated in shallow ponds to produce salt crystals, often involving entire communities working together. The salt industry is economically vital for Lombok, supporting local families and attracting tourists interested in the traditional salt-making process.

Rock salt, as the name suggests, is mined from underground salt deposits that formed millions of years ago from the evaporation of ancient seas. It is typically extracted through mining processes.

Sea salt is obtained by evaporating seawater. It is usually produced through solar evaporation or by boiling seawater in large pans, leaving behind salt crystals.

#LOCATION
The salt mines are primarily situated in the eastern coastal areas of Lombok, particularly in the districts of Pujut and Janapria.

#PRODUCTION PROCESS
Salt production in Lombok traditionally involves evaporating seawater to obtain salt crystals. This process usually takes place in shallow ponds or fields near the coast. Seawater is channeled into these ponds during high tide, and as the water evaporates under the sun, salt crystals form and are harvested by workers.

#TRADITIONAL METHODS
Lombok Salt mines still rely heavily on traditional methods, including hand-harvesting the salt crystals and using simple tools for the process.

#HARVESTING

#QUALITY
Lombok’s black pepper is prized for its bold flavor and aroma, often considered superior to pepper from other regions. The volcanic soil and optimal growing conditions contribute to the pepper’s exceptional quality.

#ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Black pepper production is a significant source of income for many farmers in Lombok, contributing to the local economy and providing livelihoods for rural communities.

#EXPORT
Lombok’s black pepper is not only consumed locally but also exported to international markets. Its reputation for quality has helped establish Lombok as a key player in the global pepper trade.
